About Us

The flagship of Ima Hospitality's family of restaurants, Ima Izakaya occupies a historic blue building on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Wabash Street—a structure that's stood in Corktown since 1889.

Step through our colorful floor-to-ceiling stained glass vestibule and you're greeted by a 14-seat bar surrounded by lush plants and vintage sake memorabilia. With ten beer taps, craft cocktails and mocktails, and a curated selection of nearly 30 Japanese whiskies, our bar program has become a destination in its own right.

Handcrafted herringbone ceilings made from reclaimed wood span from the bar into our 75-seat dining room, where a salvaged eagle icon from a local high school gymnasium graces the floor. We keep the decor minimal—warm wood tones, fresh plants in vintage pottery lining the walls, and the glittering light of a spinning disco ball, a signature touch found in all Ima Hospitality restaurants.

Inspired by traditional Japanese izakayas, our menu is built for sharing and gathering. Fresh meat and vegetable skewers sizzle on our 1600° Japanese robata grill. Hand rolls and sashimi are crafted at our raw bar. Three varieties of dumplings are made by hand, in-house, daily. Ima's signature handmade broths form the foundation of our expansive ramen, udon, and noodle menu, while our rice bowls feature Japanese golden curry, barbecued eel, house-smoked salmon, and fresh Ahi tuna poke.

Located in Detroit's oldest neighborhood, Ima Izakaya serves Corktown's tight-knit community—whether neighbors are stopping by after work for $5 happy hour Monday through Friday, celebrating life's milestones with a dining room reservation, or simply enjoying a bowl of noodles and a glass of sake at the bar. Professional athletes, local artists, and musicians gather here alongside regulars who've made Izakaya their go-to spot for exceptional food and genuine hospitality.

Three-time James Beard semifinalist Chef Mike Ransom leads our culinary program, creating elevated dining experiences that feel sophisticated but never stuffy—where Detroit gathers for the meals that matter.
